This was the topic for Sunday’s sermon in my local church.
The value of something is said to be determined by how much someone is willing to pay for it. Our salvation was costly: the precious blood of Jesus Christ. This makes the human soul the most valuable thing on this earth.
Matthew 16:26 ESV – For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?
The story of the man and his four wives comes to mind. As the story goes, there lived a rich man with four wives, the fourth being the most loved. The others followed in that order. The first wife however was a sick, tired and withered lady, unlike the others.
When it was time for him to die, it was this first wife who was willing to go with him, whilst the others were not. The fourth wife represents our body, the third, our possessions, status and wealth, the second, our family and friends, and the first, our souls.
It’s easy to take care of these to the neglect of our souls.
Death is something many a person does not want to dwell on; it’s however the reality isn’t it? Each day brings us closer to our death day. Only God knows,…
Hebrews 9:27-28 NIV – Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
Paul said this in his letter to the Philippians – For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! (Philippians 1:21-22)
One thing I can’t seem to get over is how one is referred to when they leave this world. They go from being Mr So-So and So, to ‘the body’. And yet people invest so much in this body. Hmmmm.
For the believer in Jesus Christ, death is a a gateway to life with God and not something to be feared. The destination of our souls and that of those around us is of utmost importance and should be our number one priority.
Lord, teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
May we seek You and Your will all the days of our lives and reach out to others with the Good News.
May Your Name be praised now and forevermore.
In the mighty name of Jesus. Amen!
God bless you!
